Opening of the Central Coast Research Institute Facility
Since arriving to take on the role of Director of the Central Coast Research Institute in July 2019 it has been a privilege to work alongside my colleagues at the University of Newcastle, the Central Coast Local Health District, Richard Crookes Constructions and CBRE in the design and realisation of our fantastic $72.5 million research and education facility.
On the 18th of June the official ‘handing over of the keys’ was therefore a landmark moment as the vision behind the creation of the CCRI and its co-located partner in the University of Newcastle Clinical School became physical reality.
The CCCSRI building located on the Health and Wellbeing Precinct at Gosford Hospital houses state-of-the-art facility that collectively boasts a 100-seat lecture theatre, research office space for more than 60 individuals, a board room, seminar rooms, simulation labs, problem-based learning spaces and a PC2 laboratory.

These core research facilities will help to bring together researchers from a range of health and wellbeing disciplines to conduct high quality research and act as a centre of excellence to help build research skills and capacity across the health, university and wider workforce.
Engaging closely with the local community, the CCRI’s wider vision is to contribute to the creation of a Health and Wellbeing campus that stimulates research and innovation in ways that can deliver wider economic benefits to the Central Coast community.
As a footnote to this story, the occupation of the CCRI facility was just a few days in before the impact of COVID-19 enforced the need for us to work from home. However, we are looking forward to the official (re)opening of the building soon and to growing the enabling research environment for which the CCRI has been designed.
